Visited Watch again after a great trip last year. Although the windy weather prevented us from boat fishing we fished from the far bank out of the wind and had a great day fishing dries and caught plenty of trout. The second day we managed to get the boats out and had a good days sport casting to many rising trout which came to the flies. Good sport was had by all six of us catching 50+ fish all returned. Once again were made to feel most welcome and enjoyed the trip. We will be back later in the year.

Four of us made the trip here for the first time and it will not be the last. Great top of the water fishing casting to rising fish and great sport on the dry flies. Hard fighting Blue trout, rainbows and the occasional brown, well worth a visit and you will not be disappointed. Could not have been made more welcome. Sixty plus hard fighting fish caught and returned by our party and many more takes missed.

Fished yesterday in full sunshine with a biting wind. No obvious risers despite a sprinkling of large sedges getting blown across the surface. Figured that if the trout were not feeding on them then they would be feeding on the ascending nymphs. Switched to a slow sink line with two hare lug nymphs. Ended up landing 14 fish (10 blues, 4 rainbows) to 4.5lb. and lost many more.
Fish were in tip top condition, great day out.

Fished the bank and got into some whopping Blues and Rainbows.
The fish here tend to look up most times even when there is a bite in the wind.
Many were going for a size 12 Haul Y Gwynt on the point and wee black Spiders.
Great Loch, and very reasonably priced. Saw a Adder sunning itself on a Rock just where the Cars park on the East Shore. There were loads of Buzzers (or big Midge should I say) in the air but the fish oddly didnt take buzzers as a tactic, maybe the ones in the air had hatched earlier (note to self).

Took the opportunity to book a boat on Saturday 28th May, this being my first visit in 5 years to a place that was always one of my favorite fisheries. We were greeted by club member Johnny who gave us a brief on how the fishing was going, he also gave us a hand in loading up the boat, during this short time I noticed an angler landing 3 fish from the dam wall, a good omen perhaps? Well after 2 hours without a touch we were a bit downhearted, however a chance meet up with Johnny who was walking his dog on the far bank turned the day as he said a lot of fish were rising close in up from the water tower. Small dries were our choice and they proved to be very effective as we rose many fish, however this being my first outing of the year, my reactions were like those of a dead cat. I did manage to get 4 fish including a blue and rainbow of 3lb. We came off to be met by Johnny again who helped us unload the boat who asked how the day had gone, to which we replied it had been an excellent day and that we would be back, hopefully before our clubs, Ashington Kingfishers, Loch Style competition in September.

thurs 19th may.. a good day today, had been looking for a decent day weather wise to fish drys or buzzers, it was perfect conditions 1st thing and had 2 on a suspender hopper and 1 on a black buzzer fishing the washing line, but then the wind got up pretty bad and after a few tangles went onto a single hot head damsel on an intermediate taking another 14 fish, personally I think on the calmer days small stuff works well and on the wild rough days lures just under the surface do the trick, and keeping on the move to find the fish, yet another superb day, cheers.

fri 13th may. superb fishing today, the blues which have recently been put in are unreal with some of them coming 3ft out the water when hooked the fight from them is superb, it was a bit of a hard day to start and I only had 3 fish by mid afternoon but finished the day with 12 mostly blues after a very frantic last couple of hours losing as many as I landed, it was a case of keeping on the move and finding the fish, great day!!!!

fri 6th may. another great day, fish moving on the top all over the water even on such a bright day, had 8 on buzzers and lures, the quality of some of these fish is amazing if I didn't know any better I would say some of them are totally wild, I don't think I have seen rainbows and blues with fins and tails so perfect, great fishing and hard going at times, but a very good day apart from the sunburn!!!

A floating line & a mixture of lures & buzzers did the business to catch 6 lovely rainbows & 1 very energetic blue.

Thursday 5th May, fresh south west wind and getting warmer at last. A not planned visit to the Watch, when I arrived there was no sign of rising fish and still only eight degrees but tackled up with a team of buzzers. I did not have long to wait to take my first lovely rainbow of 3lb this was followed with nice fish through out the day. Some of these fish being blue trout which were also about 3lb but fought like the devil.

It's marvellous to see the two clubs joining forces to run this very special and beautiful fishery.
So far this season I have visited three times, first outing was a month ago on a fairly pleasant day weather wise .
My pal Nicky and I took the boat out for a six hour session and enjoyed great sport from the off. Not many fish showing on top and the small stuff not working very well so put on a twenty foot leader onto the floating line with a home tied Cats Whisker variant and bingo! We netted 35 superb hard fighting torpedoes. Constant offers and quite a few slipped the hook too.
Next visit was on 27th March I fished the bank on the lodge side. It was too wild and windy to take the boat on this occasion.
Almost impossible to cast at times due to very strong winds but a bright enough day all the same.
Same tactics exactly as my previous visit, I wasn't dissapointed yet again with great sport from these hard fighting fish in superb condition. I netted 12 fish and missed a few probably due to not feeling the takes in the windy conditions. Same fly again did the trick.
Next visit was on Friday 8th April . Picked the wrong weather again! Windy, wet, hailstone showers and 10 minutes of sun! 4 seasons in one day.
Fished the lodge side and top bay, slow at times and busy at other times , especially afternoon.
Very few fish showing on the surface, fished a floating line and my prefered 20 foot leader and my own damsel variants . Black and green and orange hothead variant.
I caught 11 fish again and lost a fairly decent sized fish too and quite a few nips and pulls.
All in all a cracking days fishing by any standard.
I was also very pleased to see my first Swallows of the year , they were skimming buzzers off the surface at the Dam end of the Loch, great to see them back from their long journey.
The place is brimming with wildfowl and all manner of bird life right now. I was very pleased to see a Short Eared Owl busy hunting all around the loch. This particular bird will be catching fodder for its offspring in the nest, as like most owls they nest very early. This bird was hunting very low across the water surface and on closer inspection I could see loads of frogs unusually swimming in the open water, so this was what it was looking for!.
Can't wait for the warm weather to arrive and kickstart the dry fly fishing on this loch as it can be amazing if you can just time your visit on a nice warm day, hoppers, buzzers and Shipmans are the best bet for great sport.

Having never fished the watch before I finally managed to get up there yesterday,knowing my friend graeme keir was going up as well and having heard some good reports it was something we were both looking forward to,I didn't arrive until 11.30 due to another commitment and whilst setting up the wind began to pick up but I shouldn't have worried,I met up with Graeme who'd had 4 and within 5 mins of starting I was into my first fish of around 2lbs which was fully finned and in top condition,fighting harder than some fish I've caught more than double the size!the wind didn't let up for the afternoon but we both caught fish on every spot we tried,I netted 7 graeme 11 with numerous pulls and losses between us,I can only say I was very impressed with the place and I'm already planing my next visit which is definitely going to be very soon

Well after a few yrs absence of going up to the watch I finally decided to try it again.
After hearing good reports through the grapevine and also knowing it was under new management I thought what better time to go to a place so close to my heart..
So up to my usual spot I went right up.the lodge side,full of optimism I cast the flies just knowing what was going to happen..
Bang and the line tightened and a rocket of a rainbow flew out the water.
To see this water being RUN properly and knowing the new owners have the right intentions makes me smile as in my book the WATCH WATER IS back.
So one after another the fish thumped,jumped and pulled like crazy they really are turbocharged fish & the stamp & quality of the rainbows is second to none.
11 fish landed on what wasn't an easy day but boy if your lucky enough to get the chance don't pass if up its absolutely immense.
Thanks for a great day Kelso & newton St Boswells ac uve made me a very happy man.

another great day today, conditions where unreal to say the least with the watch more like the north sea than a reservoir!! but still managed 9 fish, had a couple on buzzers before the wind got crazy then went on to sink tip and the never fails yellow dancer taking another 7 with loads of pulls and lost fish, 39 fish on my last 2 visits, cant say much better than that, cheers again.

had a superb day 16 fish on a 6hr ticket, bit of a blustery day but yellow dancer on a floater and sink tip line when it got too windy sorted them out, had to change the dancer 3 times as it was chewed to bits!!! well worth a visit, be back mid week, superb fishery!!!!

Once again, fantastic top of the water stuff. using Royal Wulff and small green (14-16) Paraduns, single fly. Dry Fly reservoir fishing at its best.
Got into a HUGEEE fish, lost it, line broke,nope, Fly came off, nope...... It straightened my hook. Brakes went on my line as it whizzed out due to a coil which trapped on the ring. arrggggg. Cant wait to go back.
If you havent fished this place and love remote surroundings and dry flee fishing I urge you to GO!

Visited the site, without fishing gear, on Sunday 14 June, after hearing a lot of good things about the place. Met, Gavin, who taught me more about trout fly fishing in the time it took me to drink a cup of tea (I am relatively new to the sport) than I have gleaned from books and other bankside fishermen over the past year. I admitted that my casting is poor and he assured me that he would have me casting to the horizon at the end of my next visit. All in all, a great experience and I look forward to my next visit - with tackle of course. Thank you.

On Tuesday 3rd June my friend Peter and I tried our first evening session 6-10pm. It was a beautiful still evening with very little ripple on the water with the odd fish rising.
After fishing with dries for the first hour with little success I decided to go down with a Yellow Dancer. Caught two, lost two and had several pulls. As the night closed in the fun really started. Between 9.30 and 10pm I caught a further 3 rainbows and one brown. Lost a further four fish and had at least 30 pulls on the fly without connecting.
An excellent evening with a total of six hard fighting fish. This was my 7th visit to the Watch this season with an average catch of five fish.
Excellent sport on a well managed and stocked fishery. Will be back next week.

Just thought I'd drop you a wee note to say how much I enjoyed my visit Saturday last (10th Aug). Fishing was a little difficult but a great challenge for me none the less. I had my 4 fish for 13lb 5oz and returned a further 4 Rainbows, 1 13" Brownie and a couple of small Perch.
Successful patterns were Daddies, Sedgehogs and various CDCs.
I will definitely be back soon.

I fished the watch on Tuesday 6th august and had the best day I have had there with a total of 21 fish. 17 rainbow, the biggest was 9.5 lb and 4 brown trout. I had an excellent day and will be back very soon. thanks guy :0)

Visited the Watch on Thur 2nd May. Weather was overcast, cool and with strong winds. Was a difficult day initially eventually found the fish 4-5ft down on a PTN. I've fished Watch for many years but and am loving the quality of fish, give it a go if you've not tried it. They fight superbly and are full finned silvery specimens. Had a good day at the watch with 12 fish caught and released.
I was out on the boat on my own and tried some lures for a while but no luck but as soon as I changed to dries I had steady fishing all day. I fished all over the Loch but probably right out in the middle was best.
Small black hoppers were my best flies with a couple on a Shipmans.

Visited the fishery today and had a smashing time. All day sporting ticket(c/r) and what a day it was.
Had 10 trout to the net and a couple of them were in the 5lb range. All returned unharmed to fight another day. Great fishery, great facilities and most important great fighting fish. cheers

Ive recently had my first visit to the Watch now under new management. Im very impressed and take my hat off to the new guy for addressing the ott attitude of some anglers whilst on catch/release. Has the art of fly fishing gone out the window, or has it became a numbers game where if you dont catch 20 or more its been a crap day. Good on the new guy for making a stand, and ill be back for sure as will many others now. keep up the good work and all the best with the Watch Water

5th April 2012 Snow is melting in the tops of Lammermuirs and the loch is now completely free. The morning was very cold and a moderate westerly wind added to the wind chill. Half-heartedly searched the northerly bank but saw nothing move and I blanked. During the lunch break the wind dropped a bit I saw some fish moving at the dam so went there for the afternoon and had continuous sport ... lost count after releasing more than 25 fish!!

Well Bill, that was the best day's sport I have had anywhere. I have been to many an opening day but last Saturday was by far the best. Loads of fish being caught in the top four foot of water. If this is a preview of the rest of the season, bring it on. Eye Water are up twice this year but hopefully I will be up for the summer league and maybe a few in between.

Was up today, just catch & release, managed 7 on orange nomad and mini yellow dancer smallest around 4lb largest between 7-8 lb.. My mate also managed 5 on various lures largest was around 6-7lb also he lost what looked like a double figure.... We got snapped a few times also and plenty pulls .. Great fishing defo be coming back.

A fairly blustery cool breeze blowing into the dam made for quite difficult casting & not too many rising fish.A floater with a goldhead on the point & a snatcher on the dropper & we were in business.An excellent nights fishing finished off with a 10lb+ beauty.

Hi There,
I had my first day out in a boat on the Watch earlier this week.
Despite very difficult conditions with a very cold and blustery east wind coupled with day long bright sunshine my partner Mark Howard and I managed 14 fish to the boat.
We also had numerous pulls and a few long and short range releases on the barbless hooks.
It was nice to see the new relaxed rules for the boat fishing and great to have our heavy batteries etc. transported up and down from the jetty.
The fish were all fighting well and we had a mixture of over wintered fish and new stockies in a range of sizes. Quite a few of the natural brown trout were showing but they were too fast for us this early in the season…… :-)
All in all another great day and the bank anglers appeared to be doing even better than us and this was confirmed at the end of the day with more than a few scores into double figures.
The New Watch continues to improve and is a great asset to the area.
The club had a great day out on 2/4/2011 despite strong winds. Everyone caught fish and most of the members had full bags. Some great fish released after reaching limits - all in A1 condition.
Lures, buzzers and nymphs all produced results.

Fish were rising all over and i was surprised by the ammount of natural brownies in the water. The fishery manager went out his way to offer advice and look after us today, top marks go to this fishery and i will definatley be back.

I have had two days at the Watch in the last week and they were both superb although different.
I fished last Thursday with Mark Howard and it was non stop action on the Dries from start to finish.
I fished very small flies and got well ahead of Mark at the start of the day but his bigger flies came to the fore in the afternoon. The weather was perfect for fishing all day.
We ended up with hatful of fish netted for each of us but with many more fish slashing and rising at our flies. So it was all go all day. Mark had the two biggest fish of the day with one around six pounds and another around ten pounds.
I fished myself yesterday and the day was different but I once again had a fabulous day.
The first two fish of my day would have been around five and seven pounds and I had another two in the first hour.
Then with the bright sunshine the fishing tailed off with just a few of the small natural Browns giving my flies an inspection. A change down to a four weight rod, fine nylon and flies produced a couple of fish but they took for ever to bring in on the light tackle……….
A trip down to the far end where the stream runs in produced a Rainbow and a Brown but the action was fairly limited compared to previous days.
However around 14.30 hrs. the cloud started to build and the Rainbows came up.
At first it was mainly Blue Trout and then more Rainbows.
The day ended up with a real flurry of fish and at one stage three in three casts.
The transformation of this fishery is amazing.
I would recommend the boat fishing as the Watch has always been a top of the water fishery and is more so now with all the extra fish. Most of the fly life seems to be terrestrial and the fish just cruise around looking for anything small and black. CDC F Flies in size 16 and 18 worked in the morning and size 14 Hoppers in the afternoon. Make sure your flies are sitting low in the water and do not worry if you cannot see them….. The fish can!
I really do recommend the boats but obviously you have to pick your day weather wise.

Hi There,
I fished the Watch yesterday with Mark Howard and it was another amazing days fishing.
The weather conditions were borderline perfect despite a horrendous forecast earlier in the week.
I sometimes think the BBC forecast is only concerned with the Blue Peter Garden!
Anyway back to the fishing......we both fished dry flies all day and had well
over a hundred offers during the day. Obviously they all did not connect but
at least 25% did so it was non stop action all day.
I am personally not into big fish so I left that to Mark........ :-)
He had one at around Six Pounds..... and one that was either side of Ten Pounds.......!
Best flies were Shipmans Buzzers in Black and Hares Earin size 18. Moley F Flies size 21 and Klinhammer style in a Fiery Brown and Hares Ear in a size 14.
All in all another fantastic days fishing.

I fished at the Watch today. My only disappointment was my sandwiches!
Ham and cheese failed to cut it.
In fact I would have needed Champagne and Lobster Tails to match the fishing as it was that good.
The fish were already rising as I pulled over the hill and the fishery came into sight.
I was met by a friendly welcome and it was good to see the place had been tidied up and the lodge given a lick of paint inside out. The crowning glory for me though was the fleet of new boats.
With the fish rising steadily I was itching to get out and after loading the boat up I motored gently out to the middle to tackle up. I decided on a Mid Glass and Dries as a hedged bet.
The plan was to let the dries sit for about 30 seconds or so and then nymph them back.
The first four of five casts did not produce anything but on the next one a large fish launched itself at the point dry and then proceeded to go mental. A few minutes later with the boat turned right round a five pound Rainbow slid into the net.
The next hour was amazing as fish after fish had a go at the dries just after they hit the surface.
I only had one fish nymphing back but the action was so intense I could not get the intermediate off and a floater on!
Anyway the action did slow down a tad but I still ended up with a cricket score and one of my best ever Stillwater days fishing. And I have had a few…….
Some of the fish were from the funny farm as they just went mental went you lifted into them and at least 30% were ex RAF as they just went airborne with some of the highest jumping fish I have ever seen.
There was a good mixture of Blues and Rainbows and one Brown The sizes were also varied with three or four, five pounders and a few fish around a pound and a half with majority between two and three pounds.
A good variety so you did not know what was coming next.
The bank anglers were also catching steadily but it was the boats that were on fire.
All in all a fantastic day afloat.
The “New” Watch Fishery.........…I commend it to the house!
